5 Simple Postpartum Tips Every Mom Should Know (Michigan Doula Guide

Bringing a baby home is beautiful, but it can also feel overwhelming.

The truth is that postpartum recovery is not talked about enough. Many moms are expected to “bounce back” quickly, when what they really need is support, rest, and simple tools to make this time easier.

As a birth and postpartum doula in Lansing, Michigan, I support families through pregnancy, birth, and recovery. These are some of the most helpful, realistic tips I share with my clients.

1. Use a Birth Ball After Baby Arrives

A birth ball is not just for labor.

After your baby is born, gentle bouncing while holding your baby can help soothe them without exhausting your body. It is especially helpful during long nights when your baby needs comfort and you need a break from standing.

Make sure you choose the right size for your height. If you feel unsteady, a weighted base can help.

2. Rest When You Can

Rest looks different after baby.

You may not get long stretches of sleep, but small moments of rest can make a big difference. If your baby is sleeping, try to sit, lay down, or close your eyes, even for a few minutes.

Your body is healing. Rest is not a luxury, it is part of recovery.

3. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is essential during postpartum recovery, especially if you are breastfeeding.

Keep water within reach at all times. Having a large water bottle nearby while feeding your baby can make a noticeable difference in how you feel.

Support partners can help by keeping your water filled and bringing it to you during feeds. Small acts like this go a long way.

4. Set Up Your Space for Success

Before your baby arrives, create a simple, organized space where you will spend the most time.

A small cart or station next to your chair or bed can hold:

  • diapers and wipes

  • snacks

  • burp cloths

  • water

  • baby essentials

When everything is within reach, you can stay comfortable and focused on your baby without constantly getting up.

5. Follow the 5-5-5 Rule

A helpful way to think about postpartum recovery is the 5-5-5 rule:

5 days in bed5 days near the bed5 days around the bed

This approach encourages slow, intentional healing.

You do not need to rush back into normal routines. Giving your body time to recover can support both physical and emotional well-being.

You Do Not Have to Do This Alone

Postpartum support can make a meaningful difference in how you experience recovery.

If you are in Lansing or the surrounding areas, I offer birth and postpartum doula services, including support that is covered by Medicaid in Michigan.

If you are not sure what support you need, that is okay. We can talk through your options together.
