TENS for Labor: A Comfort Option for Your Lansing Birth
When preparing for birth, it helps to know your options. Alongside positioning, hands on comfort measures, and encouragement, a TENS unit is another tool you may want to include in your birth plan.
At Nurture and Connect Doula Services, I offer TENS support to my birth doula clients in Lansing, Dimondale, and surrounding communities.
What Is TENS?
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. A small handheld device sends mild electrical pulses through adhesive pads placed on your back. You control the intensity, creating a tingling sensation that some people find helpful when coping with contractions. Learn more about TENS.
It is an option without medication, and choosing it does not prevent you from choosing other pain relief during labor.
The Lila TENS Unit I Offer
I purchased the Lila TENS Unit for Labor, designed by Caitlyn Schollmeier, a Certified Nurse Midwife and mother of four. Her background combines professional maternity care with her own experiences of birth. Meet Lila’s founder.
I have completed certification in TENS for labor support and can help my clients understand the device, get familiar with its controls, and explore how it fits into their birth preferences.
During labor, I can help with setup according to the device instructions while continuing to provide personal doula support. You decide whether the sensation feels helpful and can stop at any time.
Does It Work for Everyone?
Some people find TENS helpful, while others prefer different comfort measures. Research on its ability to reduce labor pain is limited and mixed, so it should be viewed as an optional coping tool. It does not guarantee pain relief or a particular birth outcome. Cochrane evidence review.
Check with your doctor or midwife before use. TENS is not suitable for everyone, including people with a pacemaker or epilepsy, and it must be removed before entering a shower, bath, or birth pool. NHS safety guidance.
